Knowledge Day originated in the USSR, where it had been established by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 15, 1984, and celebrated annually on 1 September. This day also marks the ...end of summer and the beginning of autumn. It has special significance for the incoming class of first graders who come to school for the first time and often participate in a celebratory assembly on this date. The day also involves the First Bell (Первый Звонок) where a first grade girl is lifted on the shoulders of a 11th grade male pupil, and paraded around, ringing the first bell of the school year. Students in other grades may begin studies on September 1 or a few days later, usually without any special festivities.

Де́нь зна́ний (1 сентября) — государственный праздник в СССР и Российской Федерации с 1984 года, введённый Указом Президиума Верховного Совета СССР № 373-11 от 15 июня 1984 года «Об объявлении 1 сентября всенародным праздником — Днем знаний». Также является официальным праздником в некоторых других постсоветских государствах (Украина, Белоруссия и другие).
1 сентября — начало нового учебного года для всех российских школьников, студентов, учителей и преподавателей. Традиционно в этот день в школах проходят торжественные линейки, классные часы, уроки знаний, мира, безопасности и мужества.

"The Last Bell" - End of school year

 

"The Last Bell" (Russian: "Последний звонок") is a traditional ceremony in the schools of Russia and some other post-Soviet countries. The celebration is carried out just after all the studies are finished, but before the final exams. The date usually falls on 25 May. The pupils that are about to leave the school don the classic school uniform or formal dress; for the girls it has become customary since the 1990s to attire in the Soviet-style school uniform with white aprons and white bows in the hair. Последний звонок — традиционный праздник школьников, заканчивающих учёбу. Последние звонки в школах проходят в конце мая, когда учеба уже закончилась, а выпускные экзамены ещё не начались. Последний звонок подводит черту, ставит точку в многолетнем учебном марафоне со всеми его уроками и переменами, контрольными работами и домашними заданиями.

Последний звонок — большой общешкольный праздник, который адресован выпускникам, учителям и родителям. Торжественная церемония включает выступления гостей, директора, первой учительницы, родителей, приветствие первоклассников, напутственное слово учеников 9-х и 11-х классов.
